Book of the Week

Standard

I recently started reading Destination Truth: Memoirs of a Monster Hunter by Josh Gates.  Destination Truth is one of my favorite TV shows, and Josh Gates definitely has an envious job!  For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, the team travels around the world to different locations connected to paranormal or mythical legends in an attempt to collect evidence to support/refute those stories.  For example, they investigated stories such as Bigfoot and chupacabra.  I found it interesting that in college in double majored in archaeology and drama.  Who would have imagined he’d actually find a job utilizing both of those degrees???

Reading his book definitely gives me the travel and adventrue bug, though.  Makes me want to pack up and take off to some exotic location and go exploring.

The story behind The PTA Man

Standard

The PTA Man is not the genre of book I ever envisioned myself writing, and it’s not my typical writing style.  As my mother can attest to, I’ve always written horror-mystery types of stories.  While The PTA Man incorporates these elements, I think it is the edgier stuff that really defines it.  I wonder whether people are going to consider this book controversial, or whether it is going to make people uncomfortable.  Many readers have told me it is “dark and disturbing,” yet not something they wanted to stop reading.  However, there are other people who told me they won’t read it because of the genre and/or content it includes.  As an author who is also a psychologist, I believe that I can use my writing to expose people to all types of human nature, including the dark side.  Yes, there are topics that are taboo, or that make people squeamish, or that people don’t even want to think about…but the truth is that these things exist in the world.  They exist within many people, maybe even within you the reader.

I would describe myself as being a prolific writer in that I have about 4-6 books in the works at any given time, with another document of saved ideas to start writing on at a later time.  I can come up with bunches of ideas per day to write a book about.  In fact, you tell me something and I can somehow take it and run, and convert it into some type of book idea.  I can spend hours straight writing, losing myself completely in my work and not stopping to take a break.  I do most of my writing late at night, when everyone else is in bed and the place is quiet.  Unfortunately, the combination of these factors has meant many nights of writing into the wee hours, then forcing myself to get up for my real job a little while later!  I hope for success with my book so that I can focus exclusively on being a writer.  I would love to be able to complete more of the books I have started and get them out there for everyone to read.  The PTA Man is unique in that it will probably be the only book of this type I ever write!

About Elise Stein

Standard

I am a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania. I have been writing since a very young age, and had some poetry published in an anthology when I was 14.  The two main writers who have inspired and influenced me are Stephen King and e.e.cummings.  My favorite authors are Alice Seabold, Patricia Cornwell, and Stephen King.  Some of my favorite books (of course there are too many to list!) are Lovely Bones, The Dogs of Babel, Death Be Not Proud, I Know This Much Is True, The Interpretation of Murder, False Memory, the Harry Potter series, and Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series.  I’m also a big fan of anything related to Sherlock Holmes.

I enjoy an eclectic variety of music, from classical to heavy metal!  A few of my favorite artists are Halestorm, Adele, Christina Perri, Cranberries, Sarah MacLachlan, Metallica, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and White Zombie.

I also have many hobbies–in addition to reading and writing, I love scrapbooking and playing the piano.  I enjoy traveling and sometimes cooking.  I spend time gardening although I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s something I enjoy!

Some of my life goals right now are learning how to knit and speak fluent Spanish

Reviews of The PTA Man

Standard

Below are several reviews I have received from readers through the authonomy.com website:

“Girl, you can certainly write…Your ability to engage the reader is strong and unique.  [This book is] very edgy and gritty–a grown-up read.  Superb and talented lady.”

“I’ve flown through the first four chapters, and I have to say this is riveting stuff. Each chapter builds the story and characters beautifully. Chapter 1 was an excellent introduction… Vivia’s narrative is superb; she’s a fairly ordinary woman with an ordinary family, and she wants the things we all secretly crave. I also enjoyed Vivia’s philosophizing about life; which really brought me deep into her character.  Chapter 4. Well, what can I say about this? Firstly, I want to thank you for almost giving me the first erection since Reagan and Thatcher were getting it on! This is simply brilliant writing, and the intensity just never lets up.”

“Eroticism only works if the groundwork is thoroughly and meticulously laid, and you’ve done that…The sex itself was wonderfully described.”

“This is fantastic writing…I raise my English bowler hat and give you my full admiration. Authonomy is full of tedious reads, and this is one of the very few that actually proves an unforced pleasure, rather than a forced chore.”

“A whip-cracking read.”

“Just finished the book.  I couldn’t put it down.  My heart raced at the right moments.  Do I hear Lifetime movie?”

“This is a real rollercoaster of a thriller, packed with dramatic scenes that pull no punches.  Edgy stuff.”

“While it’s not my sort of genre, I have nothing to offer but praise.”

“This is not a book I would choose to read, but it is a book you cannot ignore.”

The PTA Man: Now Available!!!

Standard

I am extremely proud and thrilled to announce that my first complete book, The PTA Man, is now available for purchase online!  You can view the first 20% of the book for free, and then hopefully you will make the choice to purchase the rest.  Please visit:  Smashwords (www.smashwords.com) for a copy of the book, for only 2.99 [minus coupon discount].  The book is available in 9 different ebook formats including Kindle, Nook, iPad, Palm and a few others.

Within the next week, the book should also be available through major retailers online including amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.  Currently, the book cover is being worked on by a graphic designer–once it’s complete, the book will be “official” and can head out on the open market.  Right now I am relying solely on my own marketing and “word of mouth” to get the book out there, which means I would greatly appreciate any support in sharing word of my book with others.

Heads up everyone:  this book contains ADULT content.  It is steamy, naughty, and to some, dark and disturbing. But I’ve been told that it’s filled with edge-of-your-seat suspense, and that the reader won’t want to put it down.  I think that if you give it a chance–risk free since you can read the first 20% for free (even on your computer, for convenience or boredom at work)–you will love it.

Please feel free to come here and post any comments, questions or suggestions!
